Core Switching

A core switch is the data switch which serves as the gateway to a wide area network. The core switch processes and forwards all traffic so having a high performing core switch is critical.

A key advantage of a core switch is backplane switching which allows for low data limitations to ensure maximum performance. Everything that connects to the core is serviced with redundancies to ensure maximum uptime.

Edge Switching

The edge switch is the on ramp to the network, if any user wants to connect to the network they will do so through the edge switch. All workstations, IP telephones, layer two switches or any other device in the network connects to the edge switch.

It has redundancies to ensure that there is network connectivity for users even when there is an equipment failure.

Routing

For routing we use a distribution layer, which aggregates received data from the access layer switches before transmitting to the core layer for routing to its final destination.

The distribution layer device is the focal point in the wiring closets. Either a router or a multilayer switch is used to segment workgroups and isolate network problems in a campus environment.
