Help us raise money for Huntington's disease

Dan Horsfall, Silver Lining's Facilities/Health & Safety Manager is taking part in the great south run this October to support Huntington's disease.

Please take a moment to click HERE and have a look at what Huntington's disease is and why Dan is doing this.

What Huntington's disease is:
Huntington's disease is an inherited condition that damages certain nerve cells in the brain. This brain damage gets progressively worse over time and can affect movement, cognition (perception, awareness, thinking, judgement) and behaviour.

Why I've chosen this charity:
Dan Explains "This disease has had a big impact on my life. For as long as I can remember, someone in my family has been effected by Huntington's. My Nan had it and my only memory of her was in a nursing home, bed bound wearing a nappy and unable to talk. She wasn't even able to recognise her own daughter or grandchildren. Of her 5 children, 2 developed the disease; my Auntie and my Mum. The symptoms started to take a hold in their mid-thirties (not far off of the age I am now). Psychologically, this is a huge strain for anyone diagnosed; knowing how they are going to end up and also not knowing how quickly it will happen. My Mum is 60. She should be enjoying her grandchildren but instead is now completely reliant on her carers. She cannot hold a drink, feed herself or walk anymore. She is not allowed to enter her kitchen for fear of her safety. One of the symptoms of Huntington's is that you want to isolate yourself from others and in turn this has led to her being Agrophobic."

"I have chosen not to be tested but statistically, I have a 50% chance of having it myself, and therefore if I was to test positive, my children would have a 50% chance of having it also. I however, would rather not know."

"My aim is to raise awareness of Huntington's disease and to raise money to try and find a cure. There is currently no cure for the disease and there are very few medicines to treat the symptoms of this terrible illness."

"I am not the fittest person and running 10 miles is going to be a big challenge, but as a thank you for your support and contribution, I will guarantee to finish no matter what!"

Dan is dedicating this to his Mum, Auntie, late Nan and of course, his two wonderful Daughters.
